What
are Chakras?
The
word chakra (pronounced Shock-Ruh) is Sanskrit for wheel
or vortex of energy and signifies one of seven basic energy centers in the body.
The Chakras run along a central channel called the Sushumna which runs parallel
with the spinal column, in which the Kundalini energy flows, opening each chakra
along its path. The body's chakras influence our aura colors. When one of the
chakras is out of alignment, our aura reflects this.
Each
chakra is associated with an individual color and even a lotus flower, as shown
below.

Chakra
One:
Earth, Physical identity, oriented to self-preservation Located at the base
of the spine, this chakra forms our foundation. It represents the element earth,
and is therefore related to our survival instincts, and to our sense of grounding
and connection to our bodies and the physical plane. Ideally this chakra brings
us health, prosperity, security, and dynamic presence.
Chakra
Two:
Water, Emotional identity, oriented to self-gratification The second chakra,
located in the abdomen, lower back, and sexual organs, is related to the element
water, and to emotions and sexuality. It connects us to others through feeling,
desire, sensation, and movement. Ideally this chakra brings us fluidity and
grace, depth of feeling, sexual fulfillment, and the ability to accept change.
Chakra
Three:
Fire, Ego identity, oriented to self-definition This chakra is known as the
power chakra, located in the solar plexus. It rules our personal power, will,
and autonomy, as well as our metabolism. When healthy, this chakra brings us
energy, effectiveness, spontaneity, and non-dominating power.
Chakra
Four:
Air, Social identity, oriented to self-acceptance This chakra is called the
heart chakra and is the middle chakra in a system of seven. It is related to
love and is the integrator of opposites in the psyche: mind and body, male and
female, persona and shadow, ego and unity. A healthy fourth chakra allows us
to love deeply, feel compassion, have a deep sense of peace and centeredness
Chakra
Five: Sound, Creative identity, oriented to self-expression This
is the chakra located in the throat and is thus related to communication and
creativity. Here we experience the world symbolically through vibration, such
as the vibration of sound representing language.
Chakra
Six: Light, Archetypal identity, oriented to self-reflection This
chakra is known as the brow chakra or third eye center. It is related to the
act of seeing, both physically and intuitively. As such it opens our psychic
faculties and our understanding of archetypal levels. When healthy it allows
us to see clearly, in effect, letting us "see the big picture."
Chakra
Seven: Thought, Universal identity, oriented to self-knowledge This
is the crown chakra that relates to consciousness as pure awareness. It is our
connection to the greater world beyond, to a timeless, spaceless place of all-knowing.
When developed, this chakra brings us knowledge, wisdom, understanding, spiritual
connection, and bliss.
Tensions
that are felt in our consciousness are also felt in our body via the chakra
system and vice versa.
In other words,
if we were having a:
- First
chakra problem:
it would express through our Consciousness as difficulties with our daily
survival, vital energy or dedication to physical life and Body as problems
with our skeleton, legs, knees or feet.
- Second
chakra problem: it would express through our Consciousness as
difficulties with our emotions, ability to give or receive nurturing, or our
home and Body as problems with our reproductive organs, intestines or lower
back.
- Third
chakra problem: it would express through our Consciousness as difficulties
with thinking and power struggles with others or within our self and Body
as problems with our liver, gall bladder, stomach, spleen or pancreas
- Fourth
chakra problem: it would express through our Consciousness as
difficulties giving or expressing love in our relationships and our over-all
health and Body as problems with our heart, lungs, immune system, arms or
hands
- Fifth
chakra problem: it would express through our Consciousness as
difficulties with communication and creativity and Body as problems with our
throat, mouth, speech or hearing
- Sixth
chakra problem: it would express through our Consciousness as
difficulties with inspiration, imagination and spiritual power and Body as
nightmares or problems with our vision, face, head or sleep
- Seventh
chakra problem: it would express through our Consciousness as
difficulties with mind expansion and Body as problems with our brain or nervous
system
To balance your
chakras through meditation, simply concentrate on each chakra beginning at the
base chakra. Visualize the chakra as a sphere spinning and visualize bringing
white light directly into the sphere until the sphere is full of the white light...
Picture the white light cleansing the sphere and removing all of the negativity
within the sphere. If you can concentrate on this enough you will actually be
able to feel the subtle energy field here and the vibration of this happening....
now picture a bright red light entering your chakra with vibrant red energy
refilling the whole sphere until it is completely full. Now Move up to the Sacral
chakra and repeat the same procedure only filling it with orange light instead
of red, and move all the way up all of the chakras in this manner filling each
with their own color after cleansing....
This is a simple
meditation, there are more complex ways of cleansing and balancing with the
use of crystals, reiki and other healing techniques but most people notice a
significant difference just after doing one of these meditations.
